Waterfalls. Monuments. Beautiful buildings. They're all classic postcard pictures, summing up what's good about a place. Fast download speeds, on the other hand, don't lend themselves to easy advertisement. But they are quickly becoming one of Kansas City's biggest sells.

The twin cities of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri will soon launch a high speed fiber network that is one hundred times speedier than what's currently available. The cities see the network, which will be rolled out in early 2012, as an opportunity to boost their economies and draw in new business.

Businesses Question Google's Fiber Project

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Google fiber project will mean super-fast internet capability for Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. But some local groups say it's all lost unless there are useful ways to take advantage of it.

As ideas start pouring in through our online survey, we're really excited to see what others are doing to start taking advantage of gigabit infrastructure.

We were especially pleased to see the Gigabit Challenge announced by Think Big Partners. While Building the Gigabit City is designed to generate hundreds of ideas, the Gigabit Challenge is aimed at helping cultivate high potential ideas and providing resources for entrepreneurs to execute on ideas that can help transform our region.

Through happy accident, the Gigabit Challenge opens on October 3rd--the very day we'll gather leaders from around the community and have an initial, public unveiling of preliminary. Mike Brown and I had a chance to meet with Think Big yesterday and look forward to working together on these initiatives. We've got great things happening here in Kansas City!

Google Fiber world's fastest broadband service, 100 times faster than norm

(CBS) - Google has changed the way people search on the internet. Now it's changing the way some people surf the web.

Hundreds of lucky residents in the San Fransisco Bay area are now accessing Google's one-gigabyte broadband service, which is being touted as the fastest internet connection in the world.

CBS affiliate KCBS tested the Google Fiber internet service, which is being offered for free in a neighborhood just south of Stanford University.

Think Big Partners, a Kansas City, Mo.-based business incubator and startup accelerator, announced this morning that it will host the Gigabit Challenge, a business plan competition to piggyback on the arrival of Google's ultra high-speed broadband network in Kansas City. The competition, which according to a release from Think Big Partners aims to establish new companies that will fulfill Google's mission of developing new applications to expand human welfare, is open to entrepreneurs and innovators from across the globe.
